FLANAGAN Owen - The Bodhisattva's Brain, Buddhism naturalized (MIT Press) If we are material beings living in a material world--and all the scientific evidence suggests that we are--then we must find existential meaning, if there is such a thing, in this physical world. We must cast our lot with the natural rather than the supernatural. Many Westerners with spiritual (but not religious) inclinations are attracted to Buddhism--almost as a kind of moral-mental hygiene. But, as Owen Flanagan points out inThe Bodhisattvaâs Brain, Buddhism is hardly naturalistic. Atheistic when it comes to a creator god, Buddhism is otherwise opulently polytheistic, with spirits, protector deities, ghosts, and evil spirits. Its beliefs include karma, rebirth, nirvana, and nonphysical states of mind. What is a nonreligious, materially grounded spiritual seeker to do? In The Bodhisattva's Brain, Flanagan argues that it is possible to subtract the "hocus pocus" from Buddhism and discover a rich, empirically responsible philosophy that could point us to one path of human flourishing. "Buddhism naturalized," as Flanagan constructs it, contains a metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics; it is a fully naturalistic and comprehensive philosophy, compatible with the rest of knowledge. Some claim that neuroscience is in the process of validating Buddhism empirically, but Flanaganâs naturalized Buddhism does not reduce itself to a brain scan showing happiness patterns. Buddhism naturalized offers instead a tool for achieving happiness and human flourishing--a way of conceiving of the human predicament, of thinking about meaning for finite material beings living in a material world.

Mabja Jangchub TsöndrĂŒ - The Ornament of Reason: The Great Commentary to Nagarjuna's Root of the Middle Way (Snow Lion Publications) In the Root of the Middle Way, NÄgÄrjuna presents a magical method of reasoning, inviting everyone who encounters these lucid and fearless contemplations to follow him on a journey to the heart of transcendent insight. Inspired by the Buddha's teachings on profound emptiness in the Prajnaparamita Sutras, Nagarjuna sets out to probe what appears to be the most fundamental facts of the world, challenging us to question even our most deeply ingrained ideas and what seem to be self-evident facts. In a series of unassuming and penetrating investigations, he asks basic questions, such as: What does it mean for something to occur? What is meant by "going" or by "coming"? Does the eye see? Does fire burn fuel? What is an example of being right? What does it mean to be wrong? Nagarjuna extends an invitation to open-minded and unprejudiced inquiry, and from his reader he asks for nothing more and nothing less than sincere and honest answers. Yet where are our answers? Once we begin to follow Nagarjuna's clear and direct steps, the gateway to the inconceivable emerges. Perhaps unexpectedly. The present work contains Nagarjuna's verses on the Middle Way, accompanied by Mabja Jangchub TsöndrĂŒ's famed commentary, the Ornament of Reason. Active in the twelfth century, Mabja was among the first Tibetans to rely on the works of the Indian master Candrakirti, and his account of the Middle Way exercised a deep and lasting influence on the development of Madhyamaka philosophy in all four schools of Buddhism in Tibet. Sharp, concise, and yet comprehensive, the Ornament of Reason has been cherished by generations of scholar-practitioners. The late Khunu Lama Tenzin Gyaltsen Rinpoche, a renowned authority on the subject, often referred to this commentary as "the best there is." A visual outline of the commentary has been added that clearly shows the structure of each chapter and makes the arguments easier to follow.

Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche - The Ninth Karmapa's Ocean of Definitive Meaning (Snow Lion Publications) The Ocean of Definitive Meaning by the Ninth Karmapa (1556-1603) is the most profound and famous text on Mahamudra ever written and is of vital importance in the living Kagyu tradition. It offers a detailed, uniquely comprehensive presentation of instruction on both the view and the practice. In the teachings contained in this book, Thrangu Rinpoche has distilled the essence of the Ninth Karmapa's massive text into manageable proportions and has given pointed guidance on the implementation of its instruction. According to Thrangu Rinpoche, Mahamudra practice is especially appropriate for Westerners and contemporary practitioners because it can be realized in the context of virtually any lifestyle. Mahamudra dissolves the artificial separation between phenomena and emptiness, revealing the radiant display of mind. The Ninth Karmapa's text has traditionally been available only to advanced students. However, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche has kindly consented to the publication of these core teachings on the text, which he gave in the context of a retreat he led in 2001 in the mountains of British Columbia for 140 Western students. His compelling presentation provides teachers and students with a systematic approach to some of the highest practices in the Kagyu tradition. Thrangu Rinpoche's extraordinary wisdom and insight make this new commentary a peerless jewel in the canons of spiritual literature.

CUEVAS Bryan J.;STONE Jacqueline I. - The Buddhist Dead, Practices, Discourses, Representations (University of Hawai'i Press) â[This is] the first full-length volume to investigate the place of death in Buddhism in a pan-Asian context. For that reason alone, it is a much-needed and welcome addition to the scholarly literature. That it is such a well-integrated, tightly argued, and beautifully crafted volume should make it the standard bearer for some time to come. . . . A thought-provoking and sophisticated volume, which challenges and advances the ways we think about death in Buddhism, and should serve as the foundation for future inquiries. The Buddhist Dead should be read by all Buddhist specialists and graduate students, and those interested in conceptions of and practices related to death and the afterlife. I moreover can recommend assigning select chapters for use in the undergraduate classroom, having successfully done so.â âJournal of the American Academy of Religion (spring 2009) âThis volume presents research of the highest class by a set of the best scholars working in English in Buddhist studies. . . . Scholars of both Buddhism in general and of regional/national practices will need to turn to this collection for its up-to-date findings about the variety and importance of this fatally essential dimension of the religion.â âJapanese Religions (33, 1â2, 2008) In its teachings, practices, and institutions, Buddhism in its varied Asian forms has beenâand continues to beâcentrally concerned with death and the dead. Yet surprisingly âdeath in Buddhismâ has received little sustained scholarly attention. The Buddhist Dead offers the first comparative investigation of this topic across the major Buddhist cultures of India, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Tibet, and Burma. Its individual essays, representing a range of methods, shed light on a rich array of traditional Buddhist practices for the dead and dying; the sophisticated but often paradoxical discourses about death and the dead in Buddhist texts; and the varied representations of the dead and the afterlife found in Buddhist funerary art and popular literature. This important collection moves beyond the largely textâand doctrineâcentered approaches characterizing an earlier generation of Buddhist scholarship and expands its treatment of death to include ritual, devotional, and material culture.

TRUNGPA Chögyam - Work, Sex, Money, Real Life on the Path of Mindfulness (Shambhala Publications) Each day we deal with the challenges of ordinary life: a series of mundane experiences that could be summarized by the title of this book, Work, Sex, Money. We all hope that these aspects of our life will be a source of fulfillment and pleasure, and they often are. Yet they are also always sources of problems for which we seek practical advice and solutions. The best prescription, according to Chögyam Trungpa, is a dose of reality and also a dose of respect for ourselves and our world. His profound teachings on work, sex, and money celebrate the sacredness of life and our ability to cope with its twists and turns with dignity, humor, and even joy.He begins by breaking down the barrier between the spiritual and the mundane, showing that work, sex, and money are just as much a part of our spiritual life as they are a part of our everyday existence. He then discusses these subjects in relation to ego and self-image, karma, mindfulness, and meditation. âWorkâ includes general principles of mindfulness and awareness in how we conduct everyday life as well as discussion of ethics in business and the workplace. âSexâ is about relationships and communication as a whole. âMoneyâ looks at how we view the economics of livelihood and money as âgreen energyâ that affects our lives. The result is an inclusive vision of life, one that encompasses the biggest issues and the smallest details of every day. There are, in fact, few definitive answers in these pages. There is, however, authentic wisdom providing us with tools we need to work with the toughest stuff in our lives.

LOPEZ Donald S. Jr. - The Tibetan Book of the Dead, a Biography (Princeton University Press) The Tibetan Book of the Dead is the most famous Buddhist text in the West, having sold more than a million copies since it was first published in English in 1927. Carl Jung wrote a commentary on it, Timothy Leary redesigned it as a guidebook for an acid trip, and the Beatles quoted Leary's version in their song "Tomorrow Never Knows." More recently, the book has been adopted by the hospice movement, enshrined by Penguin Classics, and made into an audiobook read by Richard Gere. Yet, as acclaimed writer and scholar of Buddhism Donald Lopez writes, "The Tibetan Book of the Dead is not really Tibetan, it is not really a book, and it is not really about death." In this compelling introduction and short history, Lopez tells the strange story of how a relatively obscure and malleable collection of Buddhist texts of uncertain origin came to be so revered--and so misunderstood--in the West. The central character in this story is Walter Evans-Wentz (1878-1965), an eccentric scholar and spiritual seeker from Trenton, New Jersey, who, despite not knowing the Tibetan language and never visiting the country, crafted and named The Tibetan Book of the Dead. In fact, Lopez argues, Evans-Wentz's book is much more American than Tibetan, owing a greater debt to Theosophy and Madame Blavatsky than to the lamas of the Land of Snows. Indeed, Lopez suggests that the book's perennial appeal stems not only from its origins in magical and mysterious Tibet, but also from the way Evans-Wentz translated the text into the language of a very American spirituality.

Rick Hanson, Ph.D. ; Richard Mendius,MD - The Practical Neuroscience of Buddha's Brain, happiness, love & Wisdom (New Harbinger Publications) Jesus, Moses, Mohammed, Gandhi, and the Buddha all had brains built essentially like anyone else's, yet they were able to harness their thoughts and shape their patterns of thinking in ways that changed history. With new breakthroughs in modern neuroscience and the wisdom of thousands of years of contemplative practice, it is possible for us to shape our own thoughts in a similar way for greater happiness, love, compassion, and wisdom.Buddha's Brain joins the forces of modern neuroscience with ancient contemplative teachings to show readers how they can work toward greater emotional well-being, healthier relationships, more effective actions, and deepened religious and spiritual understanding. This book will explain how the core elements of both psychological well-being and religious or spiritual life-virtue, mindfulness, and wisdom-are based in the core functions of the brain: regulating, learning, and valuing. Readers will also learn practical ways to apply this information, as the book offers many exercises they can do to tap the unused potential of the brain and rewire it over time for greater peace and well-being.

HEINE Steven - Dogen and the Koan Tradition, a Tale of Two Shobogenzo Texts (State University of New York Press) This book has three major goals in critically examining the historical and philosophical relation between the writings of Dogen and the Zen koan tradition. First, it introduces and evaluates recent Japanese scholarship concerning Dogen's two Shobogenzo texts, the Japanese (Kana) collection of ninety-two fascicles on Buddhist topics and the Chinese (Mana) collection of three hundred koan cases also known as the Shobogenzo Sanbyakusoku. Second, it develops a new methodology for clarifying the development of the koan tradition and the relation between intellectual history and multifarious interpretations of koan cases based on postmodern literary criticism. Third, the book's emphasis on a literary critical methodology challenges the conventional reading of koans stressing the role of psychological impasse culminating in silence.

SCHLĂTTER Morten - How Zen became Zen, the dispute over enlightenment and the formation of Chan Buddhism in Song-Dynasty China (University of Hawai'i Press) How Zen Became Zen takes a novel approach to understanding one of the most crucial developments in Zen Buddhism: the dispute over the nature of enlightenment that erupted within the Chinese Chan (Zen) school in the twelfth century. The famous Linji (Rinzai) Chan master Dahui Zonggao (1089â1163) railed against âheretical silent illumination Chanâ and strongly advocated kanhua (koan) meditation as an antidote. In this fascinating study, Morten SchlĂŒtter shows that Dahuiâs target was the Caodong (Soto) Chan tradition that had been revived and reinvented in the early twelfth century, and that silent meditation was an approach to practice and enlightenment that originated within this ânewâ Chan tradition. SchlĂŒtter has written a refreshingly accessible account of the intricacies of the dispute, which is still reverberating through modern Zen in both Asia and the West. Dahui and his opponentsâ arguments for their respective positions come across in this book in as earnest and relevant a manner as they must have seemed almost nine hundred years ago. Although much of the book is devoted to illuminating the doctrinal and soteriological issues behind the enlightenment dispute, SchlĂŒtter makes the case that the dispute must be understood in the context of government policies toward Buddhism, economic factors, and social changes. He analyzes the remarkable ascent of Chan during the first centuries of the Song dynasty, when it became the dominant form of elite monastic Buddhism, and demonstrates that secular educated elites came to control the critical transmission from master to disciple (âprocreationâ as SchlĂŒtter terms it) in the Chan School.

WADDELL Norman, ABE Masao - The Heart of Dogen's Shobogenzo (Suny Press) Two of Dogen's most esteemed translators provide key chapters from his Zen masterpiece, the Shobogenzo, in English with annotations to guide the reader. The Heart of Dogen's Shobogenzo provides exhaustively annotated translations of the difficult core essays ofShobogenzo, the masterwork of Japanese Zen master Dogen Kigen, the founder of Soto Zen. This book is centered around those essays that generations have regarded as containing the essence of Dogen's teaching. These translations, revised from those that first appeared in the 1970s, clarify and enrich the understanding of Dogen's religious thought and his basic ideas about Zen practice and doctrine. Dogen's uncommon intellectual gifts, combined with a profound religious attainment and an extraordinary ability to articulate it, make Sho”bo”genzo” unique even in the vast literature the Zen school has produced over the centuries, securing it a special place in the history of world religious literature.
AMA Michihiro - Immigrants to the Pure Land, The Modernization, Acculturation and Globalization of Shin Buddhism, 1898-1941 (University of Hawai'i Press) Religious acculturation is typically seen as a one-way process: The dominant religious culture imposes certain behavioral patterns, ethical standards, social values, and organizational and legal requirements onto the immigrant religious tradition. In this view, American society is the active partner in the relationship, while the newly introduced tradition is the passive recipient being changed. Michihiro Amaâs investigation of the early period of Jodo Shinshu in Hawaiâi and the United States sets a new standard for investigating the processes of religious acculturation and a radically new way of thinking about these processes. Most studies of American religious history are conceptually grounded in a European perspectival position, regarding the U.S. as a continuation of trends and historical events that begin in Europe. Only recently have scholars begun to shift their perspectival locus to Asia. Amaâs use of materials spans the Pacific as he draws on never-before-studied archival works in Japan as well as the U.S. More important, Ama locates immigrant Jodo Shinshu at the interface of two expansionist nations. At the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, both Japan and the U.S. were extending their realms of influence into the Pacific, where they came into contactâand eventually conflictâwith one another. Jodo Shinshu in Hawaiâi and California was altered in relation to a changing Japan just as it was responding to changes in the U.S. Because Jodo Shinshuâs institutional history in the U.S. and the Pacific occurs at a contested interface, Ama defines its acculturation as a dual process of both âJapanizationâ and âAmericanization.â Immigrants to the Pure Land explores in detail the activities of individual Shin Buddhist ministers responsible for making specific decisions regarding the practice of Jodo Shinshu in local sanghas. By focusing so closely, Ama reveals the contestation of immigrant communities faced with discrimination and exploitation in their new homes and with changing messages from Japan. The strategies employed, whether accommodation to the dominant religious culture or assertion of identity, uncover the history of an American church in the making.

SCHOBER Juliane - Modern Buddhist Conjunctures in Myanmar, Cultural Narratives, Colonial Legacies and Civil Society (University of Hawai'i Press) For centuries, Burmese have looked to the authority of their religious tradition, Theravada Buddhism, to negotiate social and political hierarchies. Modern Buddhist Conjunctures in Myanmar examines those moments in the modern history of this Southeast Asian country when religion, culture, and politics converge to chart new directions. Arguing against Max Weberâs characterization of Buddhism as other-worldly and divorced from politics, this study shows that Buddhist practice necessitates public validation within an economy of merit in which moral action earns future rewards. The intervention of colonial modernity in traditional Burmese Buddhist worldviews has created conjunctures at which public concerns critical to the nationâs future are reinterpreted in light of a Buddhist paradigm of power.Author Juliane Schober begins by focusing on the public role of Buddhist practice and the ways in which precolonial Buddhist hegemonies were negotiated. Her discussion then traces the emergence of modern Buddhist communities through the colonial experience: the disruption of traditional paradigms of hegemony and governance, the introduction of new and secular venues to power, modern concerns like nationalism, education, the public place of religion, the power of the state, and Buddhist resistance to the center. The continuing discourse and cultural negotiation of these themes draw Buddhist communities into political arenas, either to legitimate political power or to resist it on moral grounds. The book concludes with an examination of the way in which Buddhist resistance in 2007, known in the West as the Saffron Revolution, was subjugated by military secularism and the transnational pressures of a global economy. A skillfully crafted work of scholarship, Modern Buddhist Conjunctures in Myanmar will be welcomed by students of Theravada Buddhism and Burma/Myanmar, readers of anthropology, history of religions, politics, and colonial studies of modern Southeast Asia, and scholars of religious and political practice in modern national contexts.

HANNES Tom - Let's get mythical !

ABE Masao - A Study of Dogen, His Philosophy and Religion (State University of New York Press) "This book is about the central ideas of the most important Buddhist spokesman in Japanese history and is written by one of the most respected and authoritative of his interpreters. It reflects a lifetime of knowledgeable and concerted thinking about Dogen." -- Francis H. Cook, University of California, Riverside "It is a truly outstanding contribution to Dogen scholarship as well as East-West comparative philosophy by one of the most distinguished modern Japanese thinkers of our time. This makes for a powerful and truly illuminating volume." -- Steve Odin, University of Hawaii This complete translation of Masao Abe's essays on Dogen probes the core of the Zen master's philosophy and religion. This work analyzes Dogen's formative doubt concerning the notion of original awakening as the basis for his unique approach to nonduality in the doctrines of the oneness of practice and attainment, the unity of beings and Buddha-nature, the simultaneity of time and eternity, and the identity of life and death. Abe also offers insightful, critical comparisons of Dogen and various Buddhist and Western thinkers, especially Shinran and Heidegger. "This is a crystal-clear handling of extremely difficult subject matter. The analyses are subtle and at the same time lucid. The author has a profound and brilliant understanding of Dogen and Shinran and is also well-grounded in Western philosophy and religion." -- Joan Stambaugh, Hunter College

BLUM Mark L., YASUTOMI Shin'ya - Rennyo and the Roots of Modern Japanese Buddhism (Oxford University Press) Rennyo is undeniably one of the most influential persons in the history of Japanese religion and yet his thought remains somewhat enigmatic from the standpoint of what is considered orthodox Shinshu doctrine today. This book, which collects ten unpublished essays by both Japanese and non-Japanese scholars, will be the first to confront many of the major questions surrounding the phenomenal growth of Honganji under Rennyo's leadership, such as the source of his charisma, the soteriological implications of his thought against the background of other movements in Pure Land Buddhism, and the relationship between his ideas and the growth of his church. The volume is intended as an important first step in expanding the field of Rennyo studies outside Japan, and to provide significant stimulus to the fields of Japanese religion, Japanese social history, comparative religion, and sociology of religion.
SIDERITS Mark, THOMPSON Evan and ZAHAVI Dan - Self, Ni Self ? Perspectives from Analytical, Phenomenological & Indian Traditions (Oxford University Press) The nature and reality of self is a subject of increasing prominence among Western philosophers of mind and cognitive scientists. It has also been central to Indian and Tibetan philosophical traditions for over two thousand years. It is time to bring the rich resources of these traditions into the contemporary debate about the nature of self. This volume is the first of its kind. Leading philosophical scholars of the Indian and Tibetan traditions join with leading Western philosophers of mind and phenomenologists to explore issues about consciousness and selfhood from these multiple perspectives. Self, No Self? is not a collection of historical or comparative essays. It takes problem-solving and conceptual and phenomenological analysis as central to philosophy. The essays mobilize the argumentative resources of diverse philosophical traditions to address issues about the self in the context of contemporary philosophy and cognitive science. Self, No Self? will be essential reading for philosophers and cognitive scientists interested in the nature of the self and consciousness, and will offer a valuable way into the subject for students.

DUMOULIN Heinrich - Zen Buddhism : a History, Japan (World Wisdom) This classic history of Zen embodies a scholarâs respect for historical research and a monkâs respect for Zen as a religion. With an unparalleled breadth of scope and detail covering both Rinzai and Soto traditions in Japan, the monumental figure of Dogen, Zen in Art and Culture, Zen Master Hakuin, and Modern Movements in post-war Japan, this book is essential reading for any serious student of Japanese Zen. The great merit of Dumoulinâs study is that he presents the history of Zen from the âinsideâ; his version follows that of an unbroken line of Zen Masters and monks, explaining core religious ideas which have shaped generations of Zen practitioners.

HARDING Sarah - Niguma, Lady of Illusion (Snow Lion Publications) Providing a rare glimpse of feminine Buddhist history, Niguma, Lady of Illusion brings to the forefront the life and teachings of a mysterious eleventh-century Kashmiri woman who became the source of a major Tibetan Buddhist practice lineage. The circumstances of her life and extraordinary qualities ascribed to her are analyzed in the greater context of spiritual biography and Buddhist doctrine. More than an historical presentation, Niguma's story raises the question of women as real spiritual leaders versus male images of "feminine principle" and other related contemporary issues. This volume includes the thirteen works that have been attributed to Niguma in the Tibetan Buddhist canon. These collected works form the basis of an ancient lineage, Shangpa, which continues to be actively studied and practiced today. These works include the source verses for such esoteric practices as the Six Yogas, the Great Seal, and the Chakrasamvara and Hevajra tantric practices that are widespread in Tibetan traditions. Also included is the only extant biography, which is enhanced by the few other sources of information on her life and work.

JAMGĂN KONGTRUL - The Treasury of Knowledge, Buddhist Ethics (Book Five) (Snow Lion Publications) Book Five, Buddhist Ethics, is considered by many scholars to be the heart of Jamgön Kongtrul's Treasury of Knowledge. Kongtrul explains here the complete code of personal liberation as it applies to both monastic and lay persons, the precepts for those aspiring to the life of a bodhisattva, and the exceptional pledges for practitioners on the tantric path of pure perception. "Upon seeing the Treasury of Knowledge, the first Khyentse Rinpoche, a contemporary of Lodro Thaye, said that it was so inclusive of all knowledge that it did not seem to be composed by a human being, but must have been written through the blessing of the dakinis."âKhenchen Thrangu Rinpoche "In Tibetan religious literature, Jamgon Kongtrul's Treasury of Knowledge in ten books stands out as a unique encyclopedic masterpiece embodying the entire range of Buddhist teachings as it was preserved in Tibet. This volume is Book Five of that work and is considered by many scholars to be its heart.... It provides a clearly structured and lucid exposition of the qualities of spiritual teachers and their students, as well as of the ethical systems of Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism."âThe Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies "Both the Tibetan original and the English translation are exemplary in their lucidity... an incredible resource for all serious students of Tibetan Buddhism."âGeorg Feuerstein, Ph.D., is the author over 40 books on yoga and health, including Yoga Morality: Ancient Teachings at a Time of Global Crisis, The Deeper Dimension of Yoga, Holy Madness: Spirituality, Crazy-Wise Teachers, and Enlightenment, and Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga.

FAURE Bernard - The Rhetoric of Immediacy, a cultural critique of Chan/Zen Buddhism (Princeton University Press) Through a highly sensitive exploration of key concepts and metaphors, Bernard Faure guides Western readers in appreciating some of the more elusive aspects of the Chinese tradition of Chan Buddhism and its outgrowth, Japanese Zen. He focuses on Chan's insistence on "immediacy"--its denial of all traditional mediations, including scripture, ritual, good works--and yet shows how these mediations have always been present in Chan. Given this apparent duplicity in its discourse, Faure reveals how Chan structures its practice and doctrine on such mental paradigms as mediacy/immediacy, sudden/gradual, and center/margins.

BUSHELL William C., OLIVO Erin L., THEISE Neil D. - Longevity, Regeneration and Optimal Health integrating Eastern and Western Perspectives (Wiley-Blackwell Publications) A revolution is occurring in the Western science of longevity, regeneration, and health that is elucidating the potential for extended human lifespan in an optimal state of health. This investigation is being conducted on the molecular, cellular, physiological, and psychological levels. Rigorous integrative medicine research can only be adequately developed if collaboration between scientists and practitioners from both fields is involved. This volume brings together researchers and scholars from both the Indo-Tibetan traditions and the international scientific community to open a dialogue about the potential to build a program of collaborative research to study the impact of Indo-Tibetan practices on longevity and health. Indo-Tibetan Buddhism claims that its core of meditative, yogic, and related practices can potentially produce dramatic enhancements of physiological and psychological functioning, and a substantial body of Western scientific evidence is supportive of these claims. The evidence includes direct and indirect clinical medicine and data from basic science research in physiology, neurobiology, and medicine. The reports in this volume establish a basis for a program of research that will advance our current understanding of longevity and health.
KEIZAN, CLEARY Thomas - Transmission of Light, Zen in the Art of Enlightenment by Zen Master Keizan (Shambhala Publications) In the thirteenth century, Zen master Dogenâperhaps the most significant of all Japanese philosophers, and the founder of the Japanese Soto Zen sectâwrote a practical manual of Instructions for the Zen Cook. In drawing parallels between preparing meals for the Zen monastery and spiritual training, he reveals far more than simply the rules and manners of the Zen kitchen; he teaches us how to "cook," or refine our lives. In this volume Kosho Uchiyama Roshi undertakes the task of elucidating Dogen's text for the benefit of modern-day readers of Zen. Taken together, his translation and commentary truly constitute a "cookbook for life," one that shows us how to live with an unbiased mind in the midst of our workaday world.

WALSH Michael J. - Sacred Economies, Buddhist Monasticism & Territoriality in Medieval China (Columbia University Press) Buddhist monasteries in medieval China employed a variety of practices to ensure their ascendancy and survival. Most successful was the exchange of material goods for salvation, as in the donation of land, which allowed monks to spread their teachings throughout China. By investigating a variety of socioeconomic spaces produced and perpetuated by Chinese monasteries, Michael J. Walsh reveals the "sacred economies" that shaped early Buddhism and its relationship with consumption and salvation. Centering his study on Tiantong, a Buddhist monastery that has thrived for close to seventeen centuries in southeast China, Walsh follows three main topics: the spaces monks produced, within and around which a community could pursue a meaningful existence; the social and economic avenues through which monasteries provided diverse sacred resources and secured the primacy of Buddhist teachings within an agrarian culture; and the nature of "transactive" participation within monastic spaces, which later became a fundamental component of a broader Chinese religiosity. Unpacking these sacred economies and repositioning them within the history of religion in China, Walsh encourages a different approach to the study of Chinese religion, emphasizing the critical link between religious exchange and the production of material culture.

WALSER Joseph - Nagarjuna in context, Mahayana Buddhism & Early Indian Culture (Columbia University Press) This impressive study, the first of its kind, employs textual, art historical and epigraphic evidence to illuminate the social conditions in which Nagarjuna worked. Walser triumphs in exposing the complexities of a historical context which until now has been portrayed far too simply."
â Sara L. McClintock, University of Wisconsin-Madison
"It is refreshing to find a scholar putting Nagarjuna's feet firmly on the ground, right where they belong. Walser's admirable book contextualizes the origin of the Madhyamaka in early Mahayana and its struggles with the larger Buddhist communities. He investigates the scriptural and intellectual background and finds Nagarjuna a canny Buddhist monk, seeking legitimacy for a new direction in Buddhist life and defending its position against the challenges of the day. His use of the surviving archiveâin Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chineseâfills in much of the gaps in the scholarship to date and takes us to a new level of understanding."

FAURE Bernard - The Read Thread, Buddhist Approach to Sexuality (Princeton Press University) Is there a Buddhist discourse on sex? In this innovative study, Bernard Faure reveals Buddhism's paradoxical attitudes toward sexuality. His remarkably broad range covers the entire geography of this religion, and its long evolution from the time of its founder, Xvkyamuni, to the premodern age. The author's anthropological approach uncovers the inherent discrepancies between the normative teachings of Buddhism and what its followers practice.Framing his discussion on some of the most prominent Western thinkers of sexuality--Georges Bataille and Michel Foucault--Faure draws from different reservoirs of writings, such as the orthodox and heterodox "doctrines" of Buddhism, and its monastic codes. Virtually untapped mythological as well as legal sources are also used. The dialectics inherent in Mahvyvna Buddhism, in particular in the Tantric and Chan/Zen traditions, seemed to allow for greater laxity and even encouraged breaking of taboos. Faure also offers a history of Buddhist monastic life, which has been buffeted by anticlerical attitudes, and by attempts to regulate sexual behavior from both within and beyond the monastery. In two chapters devoted to Buddhist homosexuality, he examines the way in which this sexual behavior was simultaneously condemned and idealized in medieval Japan. This book will appeal especially to those interested in the cultural history of Buddhism and in premodern Japanese culture. But the story of how one of the world's oldest religions has faced one of life's greatest problems makes fascinating reading for all.

PISTONO Matteo - In the Shadow of the Buddha (Dutton Publishers) Spiritual biography meets edge-of-your-seat undercover reporting: how an American Buddhist smuggled out hard evidence of abuse and torture in Tibet. For nearly a decade, Matteo Pistono smuggled out of Tibet evidence of atrocities by the Chinese government, showing it to the U.S. government, human rights organizations, and anyone who would listen. Yet Pistono did not originally intend to fight for social justice in Tibet-he had gone there as a Buddhist pilgrim. Disillusioned by a career in American politics, he had gone to the Himalayas looking for a simpler way of life. After encountering Buddhism in Nepal, Pistono's quest led him to Tibet and to a meditation master whose spiritual brother is Sogyal Rinpoche, bestselling author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Pistono not only became the master's student but also couriered messages to him in Tibet from the Dalai Lama in India. This began an extraordinary, and ultimately vital, adventure. In the Shadow of the Buddha is a book about Tibet through the eyes of a devotee-a stranger hiding in plain sight. It's about how a culture's rich spiritual past is slipping away against the force of a tyrannical future. It's about how Tibetans live today, and the tenacity of their faith in the future in spite of dire repression and abuse. It's also about Pistono's own journey from being a frustrated political activist to becoming a practicing Buddhist mystic, a man who traveled thousands of miles and risked his own life to pursue freedom and peace.

WARNER Brad - In Karma Dipped in Chocolate (New World Library) How does a real-life Zen master â not the preternaturally calm, cartoonish Zen masters depicted by mainstream culture â help others through hard times when heâs dealing with pain of his own? How does he meditate when the world is crumbling around him? Is meditation a valid response or just another form of escapism? These are the questions Brad Warner ponders in Zen Wrapped in Karma Dipped in Chocolate. During a year that Warner spent giving talks and leading retreats across North America, his mother and grandmother died, he lost his dream job, and his marriage fell apart. In writing about how he applied the Buddhaâs teachings to his own real-life suffering, Warner shatters expectations, revealing that Buddhism isnât some esoteric pie-in-the-sky ultimate solution but an exceptionally practical way to deal with whatever life dishes out.

WARNER Brad - Sit Down and Shut up (New World Library) In 2003, Brad Warner blew the top off the Buddhist book world with his irreverent autobiography/manifesto, Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies, and the Truth about Reality. Now in his second book, Sit Down and Shut Up, Brad tackles one of the great works of Zen literature, the Shobogenzo, by thirteenth-century Zen master Dogen. Illuminating Dogenâs enigmatic teachings in plain language, Brad intertwines musings on sex, meditation, death, God, sin, and happiness with an exploration of the punk rock ethos. In chapters such as âEvil Is Stupid,â âKill Your Anger,â and âEnlightenment Is for Sissies,â Brad melds the antiauthoritarianism of punk with that of Zen, mixing in a travelogue of his triumphant return to Ohio to play in a reunion concert of Akron punk bands. For those drawn to Buddhist teachings but scared off by their stiff austerity, Brad writes with a sharp smack of truth, in teachings and stories that cut to the heart of reality.

PARIMOO Rata - Life of Buddha in Indian Sculptures (D.K. Printworld) The life of the Buddha has been a great source of perennial inspiration to scholars, artists and poets since the early times. Many events from the life of the Buddha have inspired some of the greatest relief compositions in Indian art, which have been depicted in sculptures and monuments.Tracing the beginning of narrative compositions in reliefs delineating the life of the Buddha, the book analyzes these sculptural depictions of events in the context of several biographical texts on him. The episodes represent the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, first sermon and miracle at Shravasti, descent from Tushita heaven, subduing of Nalagiri, culminating with mahaparinirvana. The book explores how some of Buddha's basic teachings are linked with certain specific episodes of his life. It highlights the difference between representations of the same events by artists at various periods and places and the differences between the textual description and its sculptural counterpart. It also undertakes a survey of the inspiration provided by the theme of the Buddha's life to devotees and artists in other Asian countries as revealed in their iconography and sculpture. Supported by over 210 illustrations including drawings and photographs, it reveals the process of symbolization in visual forms and participation of the sculptors in the process. It shows that the sculptural reliefs provide a fascinating insight into the creative mind of the Indian artist: how he invented visual devices and integrated them into the formal structure and the story content and imparted meanings in each sculptural relief. The volume will be essential reading for students and scholars of art history and Buddhist art in particular.

WALLIS Glen - Buddhavacana, a Pali reader (Pariyatti Publishing) This Reader has three related goals. First, it aims to encourage the study of Buddhist canonical literature in Pali (pi). While there are, of course, several canonical languages â Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, and San- skrit â the Pali canon is exceptional. It is the repository of what I would like to call Classical Buddhism: the basic teachings, as far as we can determine, of Siddhattha Gotama (c. 480â400 BCE), the man we call the Buddha. As such, the Pali canon constitutes the shared heritage of Buddhists everywhere and at all times. Second, the sixteen texts that comprise the Reader were chosen to provide the student with a reliable overview of Siddhattha Gotamaâs teachings. I make an argument for why these texts are particularly suited to that task in my Basic Teachings of the Buddha (New York: Random House, 2007). That book may be seen as a companion to the present one in that it contains in-depth commentaries on the texts given here in Pali. As I mentioned there, the texts that I have selected are just one of numerous possible combinations of âbasic teachings of the Bud- dha.â Finally, in including the texts that it does, the Reader aims to help create critics of Buddhism as it begins to take root in the West. Our word âcriticâ comes from the Greek term for someone who discerns and judges with care. So, it is hoped that modern-day Buddhist practitioners would carefully dissect, probe, and question tradition, and not simply accept the views of believers and teach- ers past and present. Being such a practitionerâa critical oneâtakes effort. It requires us to know the facts about our shared traditionâi.e., the principles of the Buddhaâs basic teachingsâand to distinguish these teachings from the countless changesâadditions, subtractions, compressions, expansions, innovations, and, yes, manipulations, mutations, distortions, and reversals â that history has brought to these teachings.

CHĂGYAM TRUNGPA - Smile at Fear, Awakening the True Heart of Bravery (Shambhala Publications) Many of us, without even realizing it, are dominated by fear. We might be aware of some of our fearsâperhaps we are afraid of public speaking, of financial hardship, or of losing a loved one. Chögyam Trungpa shows us that most of us suffer from a far more pervasive fearfulness: fear of ourselves. We feel ashamed and embarrassed to look at our feelings or acknowledge our styles of thinking and acting; we donât want to face the reality of our moment-to-moment experience. It is this fear that keeps us trapped in cycles of suffering, despair, and distress. Chögyam Trungpa offers us a vision of moving beyond fear to discover the innate bravery, trust, and delight in life that lies at the core of our being. Drawing on the Shambhala Buddhist teachings, he explains how we can each become a spiritual warrior: a person who faces each moment of life with openness and fearlessness. âThe ultimate definition of bravery is not being afraid of who you are,â writes Chögyam Trungpa. In this book he offers the insights and strategies to claim victory over fear.

REYNOLDS Myrdhin John - Self-Liberation, Through Seeing With Naked Awareness (Snow Lion Publications) A text belonging to the same cycle as The Tibetan Book of the Dead, this instruction on the method of "self-liberation" presents the essence of Dzogchen, "the Great Perfection," regarded in Tibet as the highest and most esoteric teaching of the Buddha. Teaching the attainment of Buddhahood in a single lifetime, this text was written and concealed by Guru Padmasambhava in the eighth century and rediscovered six centuries later by Karma Lingpa. The commentary by the translator is based on the oral teachings of Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche and Lama Tharchin Rinpoche.
JERRYSON Michael K., JUERGENSMEYER Mark - Buddhist Warfare (Oxford University Press) Sheds light on an overlooked aspect of Buddhism Uses interviews from people living and involved in war zones in the Buddhist world Buddhism has played a significant role in the current global rise in religious nationalism and violence, but the violent aspects of Buddhist tradition have been neglected in the outpouring of academic analyses and case studies of this disturbing trend. This book offers eight essays examining the dark side of a tradition often regarded as the religion of peace. The authors note the conflict between the Buddhist norms of non-violence and the prohibition of the killing of sentient beings and acts of state violence supported by the Buddhist community (sangha), acts of civil violence in which monks participate, and Buddhist intersectarian violence. They consider contemporary and historical cases of Buddhist warfare from a wide range of traditions - Tibetan, Mongolian, Japanese, Chinese, Sri Lankan, and Thai - critically examining both Buddhist textual sources justifying violence and Buddhist actors currently engaged in violence. They draw not only on archival material but interviews with those living and involved in war zones around the world. The book enriches our understanding both of the complexities of the Buddhist tradition and of the violence that is found in virtually all of the world's religious traditions.

KEOWN Damien - Buddhist Ethics, a very short introduction (Oxford University Press) Written by one of the few academics worldwide who specializes in the area, this is the only short introduction to Buddhist ethics available. Addresses controversial contemporary ethical issues from an up-to-date and intelligent perspective: ranging from suicide to sexuality, and even war and economics. Buddhism is a subject of growing interest in the West for general readers and students alike An ideal companion volume for Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction by the same author, which introduces the teachings of Buddha and the history of Buddhism. The latter half of the twentieth century witnessed a growing interest in Buddhism, and it continues to capture the imagination of many in the West who see it as either an alternative or a supplement to their own religious beliefs. Numerous introductory books have appeared in recent years to cater for this growing interest, but almost none devotes attention to the specifically ethical dimension of the tradition. For complex cultural and historical reasons, ethics has not received as much attention in traditional Buddhist thought as it has in the West, and publications on the subject are few and far between. Here, Damien Keown, author ofBuddhism: A Very Short Introduction , illustrates how Buddhism might approach a range of fascinating moral issues ranging from abortion and suicide to cloning.

PREECE Rob - The Wisdom of Imperfection : the Challenge of Individualism in Buddhist Life (Snow Lion Publications) If you have been practicing Buddhism for a while, why do you still have so many problems? And how do you balance the sometimes different needs of spiritual and psychological perspectives? Rob Preece draws on his personal experienceâover two decades as a psychotherapist and many years as a meditation teacherâto explore and map the psychological influences on our struggle to awaken. For psychological and spiritual health, acceptance of imperfection is key. Wisdom does not always come as a flash of inspiration, but from the slow, often painful workings of experience. As we detach from our ideals of perfection and develop our acceptance of imperfection, our love and compassion can grow in ways that are both psychologically and spiritually healthy. The Wisdom of Imperfection delves into this journey of individuation in Buddhist life, articulating the psychological processes beneath the traditional path of the Bodhisattva. "In The Wisdom of Imperfection, Rob Preece takes us on a remarkable journey of self-discovery. The book offers a powerful vision of wholeness, based on profound insight into the principles of Buddhism as well as a sophisticated understanding of modern Western psychology. This lucid and well written work is further enriched and brought to life by compelling anecdotes and case histories drawn from Rob Preece's practical experience as a skilled psychotherapist and Buddhist practitioner. The Wisdom of Imperfection is an important contribution to the growing dialogue between Western psychology and Eastern spirituality."âHoward C. Cutler, M.D., co-author, with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, of The Art of Happiness and The Art of Happiness at Work "The Wisdom of Imperfection is a wonderfully thorough and engaging look at the unfolding of the spiritual/psychological journey. Drawing on a depth of personal experience, Rob Preece offers an insightful and important perspective."âSharon Salzberg, author of Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience and Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness "The Wisdom of Imperfection strikes an illuminating balance between commitment to a Buddhist practice and recognition of deep-seated psychological realities. This is the book for all those who wonder why they can't stop undermining and contradicting what they cherish most deeply."âStephen Batchelor, author of Confession of a Buddhist Atheist

STEARNS Cyrus - The Buddha from Dolpo: A Study of the Life and Thought of the Tibetan Master Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen (Snow Lion Publications) "This revised edition of Cyrus Stearns's The Buddha from Dölpo is a must read for all interested in the intellectual history of Tibet. New translations of some of the key works of Dolpopa open philosophical and cosmological ideas of one of the great thinkers of the Tibetan tradition. This is a marvelous piece of scholarship."âE. Gene Smith, founder and senior research scholar, Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center "Cyrus Stearns's The Buddha from Dölpo is among the major contributions to the history of Tibetan Buddhism in recent years. This new, expanded edition amplifies and extends Stearns' innovative inquiry into the life and works of the remarkable fourteenth-century teacher Dölpopa Sherab Gyaltsen, master of the Kalacakra, founder of the zhentong philosophical tradition, and architect without peer. The Buddha from Dölpo is essential reading for all serious students of the Dharma in the Land of Snows."âMatthew T. Kapstein, Director of Tibetan Studies, Ăcole Pratique des Hautes Ătudes (Paris), Numata Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies, The University of Chicago "The first edition of The Buddha from Dölpo was like a brilliant beam of light for the first time illuminating the dark chamber of Dölpopa's long-buried legacy, opening the eyes of many to the inspiring life and teachings of one of the greatest masters of Tibetan Buddhism. This new carefully revised and enlarged edition is like the sun shining through all the windows of this chamber, revealing many essential jewels in the treasury of Dölpopa's thought. It is a true masterpiece that reestablishes Dölpopa's so important, but long-denied, place in Tibetan Buddhist history. Highly recommended reading for all who are interested in going beyond sectarian biases and wish to understand what this towering figure had to say on his own ground and in his own terms."âKarl Brunnhölzl, author of The Center of the Sunlit Sky and Luminous Heart The Buddha from Dölpo is a revised and enlarged edition of the only book about the most controversial Buddhist master in the history of Tibet, Dölpopa Sherab Gyaltsen (1292â1361), who became perhaps the greatest Tibetan expert of the Kalacakra, or Wheel of Time, a vast system of tantric teachings. Based largely on esoteric Buddhist knowledge from the legendary land of Shambhala, Dölpopa's insights have profoundly influenced the development of Tibetan Buddhism for more than 650 years. Dölpopa emphasized two contrasting definitions of the Buddhist theory of emptiness. He described relative phenomena as "empty of self-nature," but absolute reality as only "empty of other," i.e., relative phenomena. He further identified absolute reality as the buddha nature, or eternal essence, present in all living beings. This view of an "emptiness of other," known in Tibetan as shentong, is Dölpopa's enduring legacy. The Buddha from Dölpo contains the only English translations of three of Dölpopa's crucial works.A General Commentary on the Doctrine is one of the earliest texts in which he systematically presented his view of the entire Buddhist path to enlightenment. The Fourth Council and itsAutocommentary (which was not in the first edition of this book) were written at the end of his life and represent a final summation of his teachings. These translations are preceded by a detailed discussion of Dölpopa's life, his revolutionary ideas, earlier precedents for the shentongview, his unique use of language, and the influence of his theories. The fate of his Jonang tradition, which was censored by the central Tibetan government in the seventeenth century but still survives, is also examined. "The Buddha from Dölpo is the most significant contribution to the study of the life and revelations of one of the most enigmatic personalities in Tibetan intellectual history, the Jonang master Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen (1292â1361). Narrating Dolpopa's life story and evolution of thought, Cyrus Stearns lucidly describes how this foremost exponent of shentong philosophical thinking and Kalachakra tantric practice served as the catalyst figure for the Jonang Buddhist tradition during its formative period in fourteenth-century Tibet. A decade after its first publication, this revised and enlarged edition includes several significant refinements and additions, including a translation of Dolpopa's own commentary on his masterful work concerning the calculations of cosmic time according to shentong literature known as the Fourth Council. With this revision, Stearns secures The Buddha from Dölpo its place within the Western-language canon of scholarship on Tibetan Buddhism, making it an essential read for understanding Dolpopa's presentation of shentong, the Kalachakra Tantra in Tibet, and the early Jonang Buddhist tradition."âMichael R. Sheehy, Ph.D., Senior Editor of Tibetan Literary Research at the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center and Executive Director of Jonang Foundation
GREGORY Peter N., GETZ. Jr. Daniel A., Buddhism in the Sung (University of Hawai'i Press) The Sung Dynasty (960â1279) has long been recognized as a major watershed in Chinese history. Although there are recent major monographs on Sung society, government, literature, Confucian thought, and popular religion, the contribution of Buddhism to Sung social and cultural life has been all but ignored. Indeed, the study of Buddhism during the Sung has lagged behind that of other periods of Chinese history. One reason for the neglect of this important aspect of Sung society is undoubtedly the tenacity of the view that the Sung marked the beginning of an inexorable decline of Buddhism in China that extended down through the remainder of the imperial era. As this book attests, however, new research suggests that, far from signaling a decline, the Sung was a period of great efflorescence in Buddhism. This volume is the first extended scholarly treatment of Buddhism in the Sung to be published in a Western language. It focuses largely on elite figures, elite traditions, and interactions among Buddhists and literati, although some of the bookâs essays touch on ways in which elite traditions both responded to and helped shape more popular forms of lay practice and piety. All of the chapters in one way or another deal with the two most important elite traditions within Sung Buddhism: Châan and Tâien-tâai. Whereas most previous discussions of Buddhism in the Sung have tended to concentrate on Châan, the present volume is notable for giving Tâien-tâai its due. By presenting a broader and more contextualized picture of these two traditions as they developed in the Sung, this work amply reveals the vitality of Buddhism in the Sung as well as its embeddedness in the social and intellectual life of the time.

COVILL Linda, ROESLER Ulrike and SHAW Sarah - Lives Lived, Lives Imagined Biography in the Buddhist Traditions (Wisdom Publications) From the Buddha in ancient India to a nun in modern-day Los Angeles, Lives Lived, Lives Imagined crosses time, traditions, and cultures to present fascinating lives and depictions of lives of those on the Buddhist path. Buddhist biographies come to life in many forms: they come from known poets and anonymous compilers; they are told by bards and even enacted by performers; they may also be autobiographies, either public or secret. Equally diverse have been the purposes they have served-as models for emulation, as origin stories for a particular community or lineage, or as narrative explications of doctrine. This book, a collection of papers presented at a conference at the University of Oxford, presents a multifaceted, multitradition portrait of Buddhist biographies. Part 1 deals with biographies of the Buddha, investigating Chinese and Pali sources and the Sanskrit dramatizations of Asvaghosa. Part 2 contains modern Buddhist life stories, including a rare autobiography from Burma. Part 3 explores the Tibetan tradition, including such well-known figures as Milarepa, Shakya Chogden, and Karmapa Mikyö Dorje. Together, these biographies and studies reveal the rich diversity of Buddhism's myriad incarnations over its long history and the dynamic scope of its thought and practice.

LEIGHTON Taigen Dan,OKUMURA Shohaku - Dogenâs Extensive Record, A Translation of the Eihei Koroku (Wisdom Publications) Eihei Dogen, the thirteenth-century Zen master who founded the Japanese Soto School of Zen, is renowned as one of the world's most remarkable religious thinkers. As Shakespeare does with English, Dogen utterly transforms the language of Zen, using it in novel and extraordinarily beautiful ways to point to everything important in the religious life.He is known for two major works. The first work, the massive Shobogenzo(Treasury of the True Dharma Eye), represents his early teachings and exists in myriad English translations; the second work, the Eihei Koroku, is a collection of all his later teachings, including short formal discourses to the monks training at his temple, longer informal talks, and koans with his commentaries, as well as short appreciatory verses on various topics. The Shobogenzo has received enormous attention in Western Zen and Western Zen literature, and with the publication of this watershed volume, the Eihei Koroku will surely rise to commensurate stature. Dogenâs Extensive Record is the first-ever complete and scholarly translation of this monumental work into English and this edition is the first time it has been available in paperback. This edition contains extensive and detailed research and annotation by scholars, translators and Zen teachers Taigen Dan Leighton and Shohaku Okumura, as well as forewords by the eighteenth-century poet-monk Ryokan and Tenshin Reb Anderson, former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center-plus introductory essays from Dogen scholar Steven Heine, and the prominent, late American Zen master John Daido Loori.

BATCHELOR Martine - The Spirit of the Buddha (Yale University Press) In this slim, enlightening volume, internationally recognized Buddhist teacher Martine Batchelor presents the basic tenets and teachings of the Buddha through a selection of essential texts from the Pali canon, the earliest Buddhist scriptures. Viewed by scholars as the actual substance of the historical teachings (and possibly even the words) of the Buddha, these texts are essential to an understanding of the Buddhist faith, and Batchelor illuminates them with her lucid analysis and interpretations. Both accessible to nonpractitioners and helpful to scholars, The Spirit of the Buddha touches upon key themes, including dharma, compassion, meditation, and peace, among others, creating a panoramic view of one of the worldâs most widely practiced faiths that is deeply rooted in its most vital texts.

DEVIDO Elise Anne - Taiwan's Buddhist Nuns (Suny Press Editions) Explores the milieu of Taiwanâs Buddhist nuns, who have the greatest numbers in the Buddhist world and a prominent place in their own country. Taiwanâs Buddhist nuns are as unique as they are noteworthy. Boasting the greatest number of Buddhist nuns of any country, Taiwan has a much larger number of nuns than monks. These women are well known and well regarded as dharma teachers and for the social service work that has made them a central part of Taiwanâs civil society. In this, the first English-language book exclusively devoted to the subject of Taiwanese women and Buddhism, Elise Anne DeVido introduces readers to Taiwanâs Buddhist nuns, but also looks at the larger question of how Taiwanâs Buddhism shapes and is shaped by womenâmainly nuns but also laywomen, who, like their clerical sisters, flourish in that country. Providing a historical overview of Buddhist women in China and Taiwan, DeVido discusses various reasons for the vibrancy of Taiwanâs nunsâ orders. She introduces us to the nuns of the Buddhist CompassionâRelief Foundation (Ciji), as well as those of the Luminary Buddhist Institute. Discussing âBuddhism for the Human Realm,â DeVido asks whether this popular philosophy has encouraged and supported the singular strength of Taiwanâs Buddhist women.
SMITH Rodney - Stepping out of Self-Deception, The Buddha's Liberating Teaching of No-Self (Shambhala Publications) Anatta is the Buddhist teaching on the nonexistence of a permanent, independent self. Itâs a notoriously puzzling and elusive concept, usually leading to such questions as, âIf I donât have a self, whoâs reading this sentence?â Itâs not that thereâs no self there, says Rodney Smith. Itâs just that the self that is reading this sentence is a configuration of elements that at one time did not exist and which at some point in the future will disperse. Even in its present existence, itâs more a temporary arrangement of components rather than something solid. Anattais a truth the Buddha considered to be absolutely essential to his teaching. Smith shows that understanding this truth can change the way you relate to the world, and that the perspective of selflessness is critically important for anyone involved in spiritual practice. Seeing it can be the key to getting past the idea that spirituality has something to do with self-improvement, and to accessing the joy of deep insight into reality.

AJAHN CHAH - Being Dharma (Shambhala Publications) Chah offers a thorough exploration of Theravadan Buddhism in a gentle, sometimes humorous, style that makes the reader feel as though he or she is being entertained by a story. He emphasizes the path to freedom from emotional and psychological suffering and provides insight into the fact that taking ourselves seriously causes unnecessary hardship.Ajahn Chah influenced a generation of Western teachers: Jack Kornfield, Sharon Salzberg, Sylvia Boorstein, Joseph Goldstein, and many other Western Buddhist teachers were at one time his students. Anyone who has attended a retreat led by one of these teachers, or read one of their books, will be familiar with this master's name and reputation as one of the great Buddhist teachers of this century.
Â
AYYA KHEMA - I give you my life (Shambhala Publications) Ayya Khema (1923-1997) was the first Western woman to become a Theravadan Buddhist nun. As such, she has served as a model and inspiration for women from all the Buddhist traditions who have sought to revive the practice of women's monasticism in modern times. Though her renown as a teacher is widespread, few know the truly amazing details of her life before her monastic ordination at the age of fifty-eight.And what a life it was. Born Ilse Kussel in Berlin, Germany, she grew up in a prosperous Jewish family that was broken up by Nazi terror in 1938. The story of her escape alone to Scotland, and her journey to rejoin her family in China, would be enough for a thrilling adventure novel in itselfâbut it is only the beginning of the story. Her later adventures includedâbut were not limited toâsurviving the Japanese invasion of China; living the life of a suburban housewife in Los Angeles, California; journeying up the Amazon; studying in a Bolivian university; building a power plant in Pakistan; and establishing the first organic farm in Australia. Her Buddhist practice was a result of a pursuit of the spiritual life that began in her forties when she encountered spiritual teachers in India. She eventually founded a monastery in Sri Lanka, from where, through her books and her teaching travels, she became one of the most widely respected of contemporary teachers, particularly skilled in interpreting the Buddhist teachings for her fellow Westerners.

HERUKA Tsangnyon - The Life of Milarepa (Pinguin Books Editions) The Life of Milarepa is one of the most beloved stories of the Tibetan people and a great literary example of the contemplative life. A personal and moving introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, it is also a powerfully evocative narrative, full of magic, miracles, suspense, and humor, while reflecting the religious and social life of medieval Tibet.
Â
BATCHELOR Stephen - Confession of a Buddhist Atheist (Spiegel&Grau Editions) Written with the same brilliance and boldness that made Buddhism Without Beliefs a classic in its field, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist is Stephen Batchelorâs account of his journey through Buddhism, which culminates in a groundbreaking new portrait of the historical Buddha. Stephen Batchelor grew up outside London and came of age in the 1960s. Like other seekers of his time, instead of going to college he set off to explore the world. Settling in India, he eventually became a Buddhist monk in Dharamsala, the Tibetan capital-in-exile, and entered the inner circle of monks around the Dalai Lama. He later moved to a monastery in South Korea to pursue intensive training in Zen Buddhism. Yet the more Batchelor read about the Buddha, the more he came to believe that the way Buddhism was being taught and practiced was at odds with the actual teachings of the Buddha himself. Charting his journey from hippie to monk to lay practitioner, teacher, and interpreter of Buddhist thought, Batchelor reconstructs the historical Buddhaâs life, locating him within the social and political context of his world. In examining the ancient texts of the Pali Canon, the earliest record of the Buddhaâs life and teachings, Batchelor argues that the Buddha was a man who looked at human life in a radically new way for his time, more interested in the question of how human beings should live in this world than in notions of karma and the afterlife. According to Batchelor, the outlook of the Buddha was far removed from the piety and religiosity that has come to define much of Buddhism as we know it today. Both controversial and deeply personal, Confession of a Buddhist Atheist is a fascinating exploration of a religion that continues to engage the West. Batchelorâs insightful, deeply knowledgeable, and persuasive account will be an essential book for anyone interested in Buddhism.

The Sung Dynasty (960â1279) has long been recognized as a major watershed in Chinese history.
The discourse of Buddhist studies has traditionally been structured around texts and nations (the transmission of Buddhism from India to China to Japan). And yet, it is doubtful that these categories reflect in any significant way the organizing themes familiar to most Buddhists. It could be argued that cultic practices associated with particular buddhas and bodhisattvas are more representative of the way Buddhists conceive of their relation to tradition. This volume aims to explore this aspect of Buddhism by focusing on one of its most important cults, that of the Buddha AmitĂąbha. Approaching the Land of Bliss is a rich collection of studies of texts and ritual practices devoted to AmitĂąbha, ranging from Tibet to Japan and from early medieval times to the present. The cult of AmitĂąbha is identified as an integral part of Tibetâs Mahayana Buddhist tradition in the opening essay by Matthew Kapstein. Next Daniel Getz, Jr., locates the Pure Land patriarch Shengchang more firmly in a Huayan context and his Pure Conduct Society not so much in the propagation of Pure Land praxis but as a means of modifying anti-Buddhist sentiments. Jacqueline Stoneâs study of the practice of reciting nenbutsu at the time of death gives us an understanding of both the practice itself and the motivating logic behind it. Kakubanâthe founder of the one major âschismâ in the history of the Shingon traditionâis placed in a typology of Japanese Pure Land thought in James Sanfordâs study of Kakubanâs Amida hishaku. Hank Glassman contributes an essay on the âsubsidiary cultâ of Chujohime, which derived from the cult of AmitĂąbha but grew to such importance that it displaced the latter as the focus of worship in medieval Japan. In his examination of âradical Amidism,â Fabio Rambelli discusses different forms of Japanese Pure Land thought that constitute divergences from the mainstream or normative forms. Richard Jaffe examines the work of the seventeenth-century cleric Ungo Kiyo, who sought to match his teaching to the needs and capacities of his disciples. Todd Lewis highlights the importance of cultic life and finds traces of the desire for rebirth into Sukhavati in stupa worship among Newari Buddhists. Charles Jonesâ âthick descriptionâ of a one-day recitation retreat in Taiwan provides us with a closer look at how the cult of AmitĂąbha continues in present-day East Asia. Approaching the Land of Bliss moves beyond the limitations of defining Buddhism in terms of its textual corpus or nation states, opening up the cult of AmitĂąbha in Nepal, Tibet, China, and Taiwan, and uncovering new aspects of Japanese Pure Land.
